WORK ON MAIN ROADS.
THE PROVINCIAL HIGHWAYS. BOARD'S'. MONTHLY STATEMENT. PROGRESS IN THE NORTH. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] WELLINGTON. Friday. The monthly statement presented to the Main Highways Board shows the more important work carried out during Jilly. Waimamaku-Ohaeawai, Wairna-maku-Whirinaki section—l 4 chains was widenod to 16ft. and metalled . 10ft. in width. Mangamuka-Te Karao.—A commencement has been made with formation to relieve unemployment. RangiahuaMangamuka.—A commencement has been made with formation to relieve unemployment.
Maungatapere-Kaikohe, Awarua; Gorge section.—ln the Bay of Islands County, five and a-half chains of road was widened. from Bft. to 18ft, and in the v'hangarei County four chains of widening was completed. Waiwera-MangaiSvai, Falls Bridge.—This bridge, including approaches, has been completed. Auckland-Helensville, Waitakere section.—427 cubic .yards of metal have been spread and 60ft. of culverts placed. - Oakley Creek-Henderson section.—ln the Waitemata County, a total of 7655 square yards of concrete paving has been laid. In the Glen Eden section some preliminary excavation had been carried out. Great South Road, Ellerslie Town Board section,—Excavation and foundation work for the concrete pavement is in hand. Bombay Hills deviation.—Formation work is in hand over about four miles of the southern portion, s 150 men being employed. Pokeno-Waihi.—The metalling contract in blocks 11 and 111, Piako survey district is ' progressing slowly. A length of 45 chains was completed during the month. Pokeno-Tauranga J unction to Coromandel-Waihou River Bridge at Kopu 569(t. of concrete piles and 18£ ft. of concrete cylinders have been completed. The construction of a temporary staging is well in hand. Hamilton-Rotorua, Tapa'pa-Mamaku.— 12£ chains of formation and 31 chains of surfacing' were completed during v the month.' Waitoa-Taupo.—Widening of the existing metalled surface between Matamata and Waharoa is in hand, 136 chains having been cpmplefced. Widening of the existing- metal between Hinuera and Matamata is" also in hand, 80 chains having been Completed. Matainata-Tau-ranga.—Tho existing metalled surface has been widenod over a lehgth of 128 chains.
