TRADE WITH THE EAST.
INCREASE IN FREIGHT. Shipping companies trading to China and Japan, says the Sydney Morning Herald, have decided to increase the freight rate 3 for a number of lines of general cargo loaded at Australian ports. It is stated that the increase, which is 5s a. ton, or approximately 10 per cent, has been found necessary owing to heavier running expenses. Goods affected by the increase include commodities such as hams, cheese, bacon, biscuits, jam, aerated waters, etc. From time to time there are fluctuations in the rates for specific cargoes, such as wool, flour, frozen meat, and tallow shipped to tine East. These lines are not affected by the decision, and so far as can be ascertained no alteration is contemplated at present.
