TOWN HALL LIGHTING.

Sir,—-My attention has just been drawn to a letter under the above heading in your issue of August 6. In case of any misunderstanding I would like to state that tho lighting used at tho recent Jor-dan-Cook recital was carried out at the request of Arthur Jordan and the undersigned, and I wish to exonerate Mr. Fairburn entirely for the blemishes in tho system used. These blemishes were caused solely because we were unable to try out the lights beforehand. Mr. Jordan and I used this particular system of lighting because we consider that it brought our audience and ourselves into more intimate contact and »s wo had both used tho samo system frequently ia another land across the sea we never dreamed that we were going to be guilty of offending any of our audience. The " grotesque appearance of the faces cf the singers " we will not worry about, for some kind fairy had already placed our photographs on the front of tho programmes. The " dot and dash" effect was caused by the simple desire to allow tho audience to refer to the programmes in the intervals between our groups of songs and' the ' muscular efforts cf Mr. Jordan and Mr. Towsey with the piano were not caused in their efforts " to escape from tho concentrated glare cf the artificial sun," but merely because Mr. Jordan has a penchant toward leaning back in tho bend of the piano while ho is singing certain songs and he didn't at first realise that when ho had tho piano to suit hirn Mr. Towsey would be deprived of tho light, agant a little fault caused through not being able to try out tho lighting beforehand. I hopo my explanations will help to " pour oil on troubled waters." Ha in son Cook.
