GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES.
Sir,—l notice that the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce has decided to appeal to the Government for a subsidy to set the export of pigs going. It is extraordinary nowadays how dependent ail sections of the community liavo become on Government assistance. Private enterprise •is surely woefully lacking in the community when even in a matter of this sort , a prominent Chamber of Commerce should set up a cry for Government help, lij® export of pigs is already a stabilised business, effectively handled by bacon companies and freezing companies, so why the necessity for a Government subsidy? The politician is fast drawing the merchant's teeth one by one, and sooner than most people realise,, the greater part of the commercial affairs of the community will bo controlled and run by Messrs. Coates and Company, Unlimited, and the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce apparently is willing to oush the movement along. A.B.
