FRESH WATER FISH.

> , ; :—; "» ' "" " : ' THE NEED FOR RESEARCH. PROPOSAL FOR FELLOWSHIP. WELLINGTON SOCIETY'S MOVE. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Thursday. A scheme for establishing a university fellowship in fresh water- fish culture is proposed by the Wellington Acclimatisation Society. At .last night's meeting of thfe society's council the Finance Committee recommended that £4OO a year for three years should be allocated for the purpose of the investigation of fresh water fish culture. The recommendation was adopted and preliminary steps were taken to find a suitable man or woman. The report of the 3ub-committee set up to consider the matter stressed the need for such investigation in view of the decrease of .trout in spite of intensive stocking. It was gathered that a trained man was needed for the position, one with an aptitude for research and a good scientific knowledge.. There were an enormous number of factors beneficial and inimical, such as environment,, food supplies and natural enemies, and tho welfare of the food supplies must be considered as closely as that of the trout. The breeding and inbreeding of thq .fish must also be considered. "We propose, therefore," stated the report, "the institution of a rosearch fellow* ship, to bo held by a .suitable nian who shall undertake investigations on lines to bo laid down. We suggest that we commit ourselves to £4OO a year, and as the headquarters and control of the work will be •in Wellington we propose that the society should immediately make an offer on these general lines to tho Victoria College Council and suggest that they should appoint suitable delegates to confer with ours in drawing up the details of the scheme," The report suggested that the name should be the Wellington Acclimatisation. Fellowship for research in the conditions governing of life on the salmonidae, a family of fish containing the salmons and their allies, the trouts, etc., in the waters of the Wellington district. The appointment is to be for theree years, terminable at six months', notice. The manor woman appointed shall be a graduate in science of the New Zealand University, and shall have passed an examination for B.Sc. in chemistry, physics, botany and zoology. The chairman, Mr. G. F. Anson, and Mr. G. V. Mcintosh, were appointed to consult with tho Victoria College Council. |
