PROTECTION OF WOMEN.

WORK OF THE SOCIETY. The Society for the Protection of Women and Children and for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals met this week, the Rev. P. S. SmallSeld presiding. The Rev. J. Calder reported that steps were being taken by the Animal Welfare League to effect registration under a new as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and hoped to be in a position to take over the functions of this branch of the society's work at an early date. The present society would then re-register under the title of " The New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children." Reports showed that several "cautions had been given in regard to the working of horses -in an unfit state, also rough handling of horses and over crowding of poultry. The inspector bad humanely destroyed five animals. Eighteen cases of cruelty to women and children had been attended to during the month. Of these 11 dealt witli troubles between wives and husbands, three concerned children, two affiliation cases and two various matters. Ten cases were taken to Court, and orders were made by the magistrate in six, the rest being withdrawn or privately arranged.
