NEW ZEALAND SURVEYORS.

CONFERENCE CONTINUED. SUCCESSFUL SMOKE CONCERT. The annual conference of tho New Zealand Institute of Surveyors was continued yesterday. Business was confined to the meetings of the council, presided over by tho president of the institute, Mr. J*. I. of Nelson. A remit from the Taranaki branch asked that the standard surveys in Taranaki should be looked into because, it was maintained, they contained several manifest errors. The branch also urged that rural surveys should bo investigated. The council agreed to wait upon the SurveyorGeneral in Wellington and state the Taranaki views for his information and guidance. . A smoke concert wa,s tendered to, the delegates last evening by the Auckland branch of the institute. Mr. C. K. Or i ergon, tihairman of the branch, presided over an enthusiastic gathering. The toast of the guests was propesed by Mr. Ledger and was replied to by Mr. W. E. Bush, city engineer and president of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers; Mr, F. E. Powell, on behaiif of the Auckland branch of the Society <>f Civil Engineers; Messrs. W. H. Gummcr and C. Trevif.hick, on behalf of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects; and Mr. P. J. Crump, on behalf, of the Auckland Jrteal Estat'o Agents' Association. Mr. E. V. Blake proposed the toaßfc of Government departments and replies were made by Messrs, H. J; Lowe and K., M. Graham, commissioners 'of Crown lands, on behalf of the Land,!! and Survey-De-partment, and Mr. 0. N. Campbell, chief drainage engineer. The visiting surveyor:; wero toasted by Mr. I'reston • Chamberii (Auckland), Mr. Ledger and Mr. A. If. Bogle (Wellington i responding. Other speakers included Messrs. J; A. Sandford (Auckland) and H. L. Paterson (DunedinJ. 'All speakers dwelt on the cordial relations existing between tho various bodies and tae co-oper-ation extended by officials of the Government departments. An enjoyable musical programme was given. To-day the delegates will bs conducted by th e members of tho local branch on a motor drive round the city, visiting a number of public works of special interest to surveyors. This will bring ithe conference to a conclusion.
