TE KUITI AFFAIRS.

TOWN HALL PROPOSAL. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] TE KUITI. Tuesday. The Te Kuiti Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. H. Rothery, presiding. The Waitomo Power Board wrote in regard to the suggestion that it should rent offices and showrooms in the proposed town hall buildings. As the provision of suitable accommodation for the board was becoming urgent it was suggested that the council deal with the matter as quickly as possible. Mr. T. M. O'Connell said Te Kuiti and Taumarunui were the only towns in the Auckland Province which did not have a town hall which was not a payable proposition. He reviewed the cost and success of similar buildings at Ngaruawahia, Taihape and Otorohanga, and said if an agreement to lease the theatre was made with a cinema company there should be no'difficulty in making a building costing £IO,OOO a paying proposition. He suggested that- the site be that of the present municipal building. The Mayor said there was no doubt Te Kuiti should have had a town hall years ago, but he did not agree that it should be built on the present site. A theatre should be in n, more central position. It was decided that a sub committee, consisting of the Mayor and Messrs. Cochrane, O'Connell. Blackmail and. Hitchcock, go further into the matter and consult with the Power Board. The Power Board advised that an inspection of the street lights in Te Kuiti showed that 40 of the lights required new fittings and rewiring. It had proved so far impossible to obtain the fittings in New Zealand. Thev would arrive .in about 10 weeks and the work would then be put in hand. It was reported that 100 plane and sycamore trees were to be planted in the Returned Soldiers' Memorial Avenue upon the New Plymouth Road.
