WAIHI BOROUGH.
NO UNEMPLOYMENT LOAN. [BV TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT, j WAIHI, Friday. With the object of preventing distress in, Waihi during the winter months through unemployment the Mayor recently made inquiries as to the possibility of raising a loan of £2OOO under the empowering bill lecently passed by Parliament. His efforts in fliis direction appeared likely to be attended with success, a favourable reply having been received from the Public Trustee, and at a special meeting of the Borough Council last night the Mayor submitted the proposal to members. He intimated that if approved the money would be expended on important and essential public works. These included the tar-sealing of streets in the business part of the town and the completion of the unmet-ailed portion of the road to Waihi's seaside resort, for which latter work the Government had promised a grant of £540, subject to the council expending a corresponding sum. The Mayor then moved the formal motion necessary in connection with the raising of a loan. He found supporters in Messrs, Paterson and Callaghan. but Messrs. Short, Dale, Butcher, r Morgan spoke in opposition- lh £™ 0t10 " was defeated by eight votes to throe.
