AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS.

MATCH AGAINST SURREY. STRONG LEAD OBTAINED. HOME SIDE SIX FOR 82. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. Renter. LONDON. July 29. lhe cricket match Australia v. Surrey was continued at the Oval at 3.15 p.m. today. The delay was due to the sodden state of the wicket through overnight rain. The weather this afternoon was fine and sunny, hut at the request of the Surrey Cricket Club, and with Bardsley's consent, play was resumed on a new wicket, which was easy. The attendance totalled 10,000. When stumps were drawn last evening the Australians had made 355 runs for seven wickets (Ryder not out 58, Grimmet not out 6). On going to the wicket to-day Qrimmet got to work early. He drove Peach and Lockton vigorously to the off. Ryder continued to drive powerfully and picked up a number of runs on the side. The batsmen were cautious, and several full tosses were left unpunished. • Many runs were saved by smart fielding. Ryder glanced one from Fender to leg for three, and reached his century. He had been batting 125 minutes. Australian Innings Declared. Shepherd proved expensive. Twentyone runs were knocked off his bowling in three overs. Then Peach, with a new ball, replaced him and his third ball Grimmet turned into the hands of Jeaeocke at short leg. The score was then 428 for eight wickets. In the next over, with the addition of four runs, Ryder attempted to send one j from Fender vigorously to leg, but the ball went straight to Jardino at squareleg. Ryder had batted 135 minutes forcefully and accurately. He had hit nine fours. The visitors' innings was then declared closed. The score was 432 for nine wickets. Five Surrey Wickets Soon Fall. Everett and Ryder opened the bowling against Hobbs and Sandhani. Everett sent down short ones, causing the ball to rise and demanding care. The batsmen were slow in opening. Four overs only produced one single. Hobbs was anxious to get moving and lifted Ryder dangerously. When the total was 15 Hobbs was snapped up at the wicket in attempting to hit a ball which came wide off Macartney. The latter's first four overs yielded only one run. which was the result of an overthrow. Macartney beat Sandham with a ball which came through instead of breaking. Jeaeocke and Shepherd fell quickly, and the scoro was then 42 for lour wickets. Jardine and Gregory had carried the total to 64 when the latter hit against a break ball and lifted it toward squareleg. Oldfield ran out and effected a fine catch. G-rimmett's Deadly Bowling. Grimmett and Macartney were getting a lot of work on the ball on a pitch which was drying all day under the influence of a warm sun. Fender had made four when ho gave a very hot chance to Andrews at " silly " point off Mailey. Andrews was cheered for making a magnificent attempt to hold the ball. The day closed with the dismissal of Fender, who, in attempting to make a big drive, skied the ball to mid-on where it was easily held by Everett. Fender was the only batsman who was able to deal with Grimmett, who had got a huge turn on the ball, both ways. Details of the scores arc:— AUSTRALIA.—First Innings.
