NEW LYNN DISTRICT.
THE UNEMPLOYMENT LOAN. STANDARD OF ROAD FORMATION. The fortnightly meeting' of the New Lynn Town Board was held on Monday, the chairman, Mr. C- F. Gardner, presiding. In connection with the proposal to raise £2OOO to provide work for unemployed, the superintendent of the State Advances Office wrote asking how many unemployed there were in New Lynn. The chairman said the proposed loan was part of a scheme urged by the Mayor -of Auckland whereby local bodies could help to alleviate the distress caused by unemployment in Auckland. There were about twenty local men out of work. Details of the work proposed to be undertaken will bp furnished to the department-. The Department of Internal Affairs notified that the request for peeping open polling booths at local elections until- 7 p.m. would receive attention. . The Auckland City Council advised that Oakley Creek Bridge on the Great North Road would be closed for approximately two months while concreting work was proceeding. The waterworks department stated that complaints of leaky pipes on the corner of Great North . Road and Bollard' Avenue were receiving attention. ( The Police Department wrote stating that facilities were being given to the resident constable at Avondale to give more supervision at New Lynn. The department had come to the conclusion that there was no occasion for establishing a police station with a resident constable •it New Lynn. ' Further complaints were received regarding the non-functioning of a number of street lights, and it was decided to' communicate with the Waitemata. Electric Power Board. A committee set up to inspect the street lighting of the township recommended that several lights should, be removed to other positions where they would give better service. The report was adoptejl. - i Mr. F. L. Carlton wrote suggesting that Seabrook Avenue should be the main connecting road with Titirangi' Road. No action was taken. In accordance with notice of motion, Mr. .T. Hughes moved that the standard of road formation of new roads should be raised. He suggested various improvements. The motion was seconded by Mr. H. S. Wilding. In reply to a question the engineer said Mr. Hi'ghes' proposals embodied a greater depth of metal than the board itself proposed to put- on the roads , in its roading scheme. The chairman said he was afraid that if the standard* of roading was raised too high it might prevent owners of large blocks of land from subdividing their properties. After : further discussion the motion was carried. • further motion by Mr. Hushes that the i mover, Mr. Roberts, and Mr. ' Wilding should be a committee to draft a suitable standard of roading was also agreed to. The building inspector reported that 'en buildings were in course of erection -d six new permits had been granted, the total value being £2620. ■ - The chairman was deputed to give evidence on behalf of the board to.the committee hearing objections to the motorbus regulations. A suggestion made that endeavours should be made to grant local bodies on each <-r>rte rights to revise id grant bus time-tables was agreed to.
