FALL OF THE FRANC.
NO NOTICEABLE EFFECTS. QUOTATIONS IN STERLING. Business houses in Auckland have so far noticed no appreciable effect on trade following the fall in the franc, but inquiries made yesterday showed that any development would by no metins bo to the detriment of the French manufacturer.
"They are too shrewd for the British indentor," remarked the principal of one Auckland house, with a smile almost of admiration. Their adroitness, he said, was shown in their methods of quotation. Where the price was named in francs, care was always taken to adjust it suitably, nut there were few French houses that quoted other than sterling rates. Most of the firms reported that the prices were quoted in sterling. "About a year ago," said one business man, "we received a very cheap line of goods, but the French have awakened to the situation since then. The quotations are now always given in sterling." The only elt'eet of the present crisis noticed so far is that some French houses, uncertain about the situation, have closed down on all orders.
