THE NATIONAL COUNCIL.

A meeting of the National Council of Women was held last evening. The president, Dr. Hilda Northcroft, presided over a good attendance. In regard to a complaint, of inadequate provision for collection of garbage, the Mount Albert, Mount Eden, Newmarket and Devonport councils notified that the subject was receiving consideration. Tho City Council stated collections twice weekly were undertaken in the old city area and Parnell and it was anticipated this would extend to other portions of the city when the need arose. Rubbish carts had now been fitted with covered-in tops but it was not sufficient to leave a hole as the different sections of the cart had to ho filled in turn and tho sliding covers adopted were the nearest approach to the hole that could be obtained.

Regarding the installation of ponny-in the slot gas rings on beaches, as was dona in Dunedin and elsewhere for the benefit of families and others picnicking on the beaches, tho Gas Company said that, provided some sites were selected in close proximity to tho gas mains, and suitable arrangements could he made with the local authorities the company would bo prepared to instal tho meters ami gasrings. It was decided to write to tho Gas Company to ascertain what beaches they could supply with rings. Tho City Council would then bo approached. The following remit was received: That the executive write to the Education Board and the School Committees Association advocating that in every school having a staff of teachers separate rooms should be provided as common rooms for men and women teachers. The School Committees will be urged to consider the question of the provision of drinking vessols for school children, so that the objectionable and dangerous habit of drinking from taps and dirty hands would be eliminated. Provision of proper sanitary appliances will also be urged.
