WHANGAREI NOTES.

WORK ON THE RAILWAY,

[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WBANGAREI, Monday The principal work in progress on the Whangarei section of the railway is the raising of the embankment through Whangarei Borough and Mr. H. Gillespie, inspector of permanent ways, estimates that it will take about five months to complete the filling at the present rate of 2000 yards a week. The total amount required for the work is about 40,000 yds. Notice of transfer to Wanganui lias been received by Mr. Gillespie, who has been stationed at Whangarei for the past five years. In that period Mr. Gillespie has seen many improvements on the line, the principal being the construction of the new station and yards at Whangarei, alterations at the Hikurangi station and yards, and the relaying of approximately 30 miles of the track. The unsatisfactory condition of the Tauraroa Bridge during flood periods was discussed at the annual meeting of the Maungakaramea branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. Several head of cattle were drowned at the bridge recently and a line of sheep bought, at the last Maungakaramea sale for trucking at Tauraroa could not be taken to the railway line for over a week owing to the bridge being under water. It vvas decided to approach the district engineer oi the Public Works Department at Whangarei again pointing out the danger and asking him to have the necessary renewal of the bridge work put in hand immediately.
