WINTER COMPETITIONS. KELL.S WINS STEEPLECHASE. The winter competitions promoted by the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club were advanced a further stage on Saturday when several interesting events were decided under favourable weather conditions. The cross-country season was opened with a race over two circuits of the cricket ground at the Domain and over the hill. Among the competitors was A. L. Brown, the Dominion cross-country champion, who has recently been transferred from Dunedin to Auckland. Detailed results of the events are as follow: Steeplechase (about one mile and a-half). —G. Kells (8s), 7m 3 2-ss, 1; J. W. Savidan (scr), 7m, 2; E. L. Brown (scr), 7m ss, 3; T. M. Wilson (4s), 7m 13s, 4; H. McCoy (255), 7m 465, 5. Also started: W. Perry, 15s. 75Yds. Handicap.—W. Perry. syds, 1; D. M. Gordon, liyds, 2; T., M. Wilson, 7}yds, and D. P. Deere; (ljyds), dead-heat, 3. Eleven started. Time, 7 4-ss. Throwing Discus.—G. R. Metcalfe (23ft.), 85ft 2in, 1: J. W. Savidan (22ft 6in), 79ft 6in, 2: J. W. Shirley (scr), 78ft Sin, 3. Thirteen competed. Putting 161b. Shot.—W. Perry (7ft), 35ft 3in, 1: T. Elliott, sen. (Bft), 34ft 4in, 2; J. R. McCrystal (sft), 31ft "in, 3. Thirteen competed. Broad Jump.—J. W. Shirley (scr), 21ft Gin 1- D. P. Deere (2ft 6in), 20ft 6in, 2; D. M.'Gordon (2ft Sin), 19ft llin, 3. Another series of events will be decided next Saturday.
AUCKLAND AMATEUR CLUB. ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT. The Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club held its annual prize presentation evening at the Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, the good attendance including several old-time champions. The guests of honour wero Messrs. J. W. Shirley and W. Savidan, who will leave for Australia next Friday to represent New Zealand at the Australasian track and field championship meeting in Brisbane. Mr. W. Morton, who presided, presented the Victor Ludorum to N. E. Williams and the Sportsman and Kohn Cups to J. W. Shirley. He wished the two Aucklanders the best of good luck during their forthcoming engagements. Mr. Morton classed Shirley as tho most versatile athlete New Zealand had produced. Musical items were contributed hy Messrs. C. Turner, C. Meldrum, L. Bickerton, A. Colquhoun, W. Forshaw, and J. Delaney, Mr. W. Purcell acted as accompanist. Tho toast of "Kindred Sports" was responded to by Mr. N. E. Williams, Rugby football; Mr. J. M. Downie, Association football; Mr. B. Powell, League football; Mr. W. J. Davidscfh, swimming; Mr. W. E. Hackett. boxing; Mr. J. K. Douglas, racing; Mr. E. S. Kohn, bowling.
