BY-ELECTION IN BRITAIN.
LABOUR RETAINS THE SEAT. WOMAN CANDIDATE WINS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 10 p.m.) LONDON. July 22. The by-election for the Wallsend seat, rendered necessary by the resignation of Sir Patrick Hastings (Labour), resulted as follows: . Miss Margaret Boncifield (Labour). . 18,866 S. Howard (Conservative) . . . . 9,839 Curry (Liberal). . 4,000 The Daily Herald claims that the Wallsend victory, following Darlington, East Ham and Hammersmith, indicates a great swing tuward Labour throughout the country.
The voting for Wallsend at the last general election was:—Sir Partick Hastings, 17.274; S Howard, 15,672. Mis* Margaret Bondfield is the chief woman - officer of the National Union of General and. Municipal Workers. She was Labour member for Northampton from 1923 to 1924 and was Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour in 1924.
