TIMBER LANDS ABLAZE.
DAMAGE IN CALIFORNIA. MINING TOWN DESTROYED. By Telegraph—Press Association— -Copyright. A. and N.Z. SAN FRANCISCO. July 20. Forest fires have been burning practicallv unchecked for several days in several counties in Northern California. The outbreaks ravaged the timber lands in or near five national forests and left a trail of smoke over hundreds of acres of private lands. It is estimated that more than 100.000 acres have been burned. The historic mining town, Quartz, was destroyed, and the neighbouring town, Stent, was partly destroyed. The residents of Standard City, which is in the direct path of the flames, are reported tcu~be fleeing with their possessions. Half-exhausted fire-fighters totalling more than 2000 are continuing their efforts to stem the spread of the flames, but the weather forecast of continued high temperature and low humidity gives little hope, of a cessation of the fires for some days.
