PROFITS ON APPLES.
PRODUCER NOT SHARING. QUESTION IN THE COMMONS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. July 21. The Conservative member for North Bradford, Mr. E. Ramsden, drew attention in the House of Commons to the fact that Australian and New Zealand apples are selling wholesale at 6s to 9s a case of 381b. to 401b. According to the Imperial Economic Committee, he said, this represented a serious loss to the producer, yet the retail price was about 6d a lb. Mr. Ramsden asked if it was intended to take action to prevent retail profiteering. Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister, Fresideut of the Board of Trade, replied that the report of the Economic Committer said it was difficult to estimate with reasonable accuracy the profits made by retailers of fresh fruit. He had asked the Food Council to report on this matter.
