HIGHER PRICE FOR BREAD.

DECISION IN CANTERBURY.

CRITICISM BY A BAKER.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCI3URCH, Saturday.

As a result of the inoreased price of flour the bakers of Christchurch have decided to' raise the price of bread on the scale of Id on each large loaf and gd on each 2lb. loaf. That' this increase does not meet with general approval from the bakers was revealed by a prominent Chnstchurch baker who was interviewed to-day. .He contended that in spite of dearer flour the bakers, particularly those with the largest businesses, would, by putting up the price of bread to the extent decided upon, secure monthly profits of about £IOO more than before on the bread sold. " At Id extra on every large loaf and jd on 21b. loaves, the bakers would get a return of about £2 15s more on a ton of flour and they would be charged only £1 a ton more for flour. In this way there would be £IOO a month profit for some of the big bakers. " Personally," continued this baker, " I am putting only J>d extra" on the large loaves which covers all the expenses necessitated. With the rates suggested, take a man who uses 50 tons of flour every month. To him an additional £1 13s or £1 14s made on each ton of flour becomes a big item. I shall not put up my bread until the first of the month. All bakers order from the first of each month for that month. They all have the flour they want for this month, which they bought at the old rates and so "there is no necessity to increase the prices until August 1. I suppose the millers' idea is to force the hand of the farmers."

THE BATES POR WHEAT. NO ADVANCE BY MILLERS. [by telegraph.—press association.] , ... CHEISTCEUBCH. Saturday. The action .of the millers in increasing the price of flour in Christchurch by £1 a tori raised the 'hope in sotbe quarters that they would be prepared to give more for wheat. However,-• a merchant stated yesterday that he had approached millers to see if they would pay more, but they were not prepared to do so.
