THREW STONE AT HORSE. DRIVER FINED WO POUNDS. [Bi* TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Aroused to anger by tho sight of a cut on the body of one of his horses George Wiggins, a carter, hit with a whip the nine-year-old boy who threw the stone. In the Children's Court to-day Wiggins pleaded guilty to a charge of having assaulted the boy. Senior-Sergeant Martin said that defendant was driving a two-horse dray along Cambridge Terrace, Wools ton, when he used the whip on the boy and struck him across the face. It was alleged the boy had thrown a stone, but even had he done so, defendant should have put tho matter in the hands of tho police. Defendant was sorry for what ,he had done and the boy denied that he had thrown a stona. Mr. Tracy, who appeared for defendant, said the boy threw two stones. On« struck the horse and cut its flesh, and the other hit defendant on the leg. Defendant called the boy over and as he offered no excuse or apology, defendant struck him. In answer to Mr. Widdowson, S.M., defendant said he did not mean to hit the boy on the face. He was annoyed because one of the horses was valuable and, further, because there was a danger that the pair might have bolted. The Magistrate: That was certainly aggravating, but yon should have controlled your temper better. Wiggins was fined £2, in defaalt, seven days' imprisonment.
