DANGERS OF THE STREET.

INCREASE IN ACCIDENTS. " CRIMINAL BREACHES OF DUTY." The conditions of street traffic were commented upon by Mr. Justice-Herdnian in the Supreme Court yesterday in sentencing the young man Andrew Donald for negligent driving of a motor-car. "Recently," said His Honor, "the number of accidents that have been the result of a criminal breach of duty has increased —so much so that the public has become alarmed. Time after time one has lately witnessed exhibitions of dangerous driving along the new concrete roads. The police and the traffic inspectors, who appear to perform their difficult tasks remarkably well, cannot be everywhere, so drivers will have to be taught that they cannot indulge in recklessness with impunity. "No doubt some accidents are unavoidable. In some cases careless pedestrians have only themselves to blame if they refuse to look where they are going, and so suffer injury, but if care in driving is exercised and insisted upon the number of catastrophies will, I am sure, decrease."
