ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. " Wager," Mnngatangi.—On the second da>' of th« Australian Jockey Club's Spring Meeting held at Rundwick 011 September 11. 1905. the .whole of the, events (six in number) were won by Now Zealand-bred horses. The successful horses and the races won were as follow Machine Gun (Shorts Handicap). Isolt (Maiden Stakes). Maniupoto (Metropolitan Stakes), Sultana (Steeplechase). Sun God (New Stakes). and Nightfall (Squatters' Handicap). NOTES BY PHAETON. THE GREAT NORTHERNS. The 19 horses that claim the double engagement in connection with the Great Northern Hurdle Race and Great Northern Steeplechase continue to hold their places, and, with such an array of promising material, it is not surprising to find a strong opinion prevailing that another double winner may bo entered up when the records tonic to be adjusted next • month. Llewellyn appears to be tho one singled out for most, attention in local circles at present, but tho favouritism displayed for the Lucullus ceiding is probably largely influenced by tho fact of his being locallyowned. The following is a list of the horses claiming the doublo engagement: G. N. Hurdles. G.N. Sfeeples.

A first acceptance for both races falls flue 011 tho 23th irist. NUKUMAI THE VERSATILE. Nuknmai has long since earned a character for consistency, and in now registering a victory across country he takes a place with all-round performers having won on the fiat, over hurdles, and across country. Nukurnai was viewed in a promising light in the winter of 3921, and just prior to recording hi 3 success in the Winter Hurdle Race at Trenthani in that rear- someone made an eflort. to buv him, but Mr. S. G. Davidson elected to keen his horse, and he has excellent reason to rejoice thereat, for •u the interval he has won several thousands in stake-money. Up-to-date Xukumni has contested 5G races, and his record stands as UnFirst. Second. Third, placed. At 4yrs . . 4 3 3 7 At. Svrs . . 3 3 3 7 At fiyrs . . 3 2 1 7 At 7vrs ... 6 2 1 1 16 10 8 22 Xukumai is engaged as follows:—Wanganui Steeplechase (11.11), Century Hurdle Race (11.13). and Great Northern Hurdle Race (11.12). MISCELLANEOUS NOTES When R uapapi was struck out. of the Cornwall Handicap last Monday it was rumoured that the son of Polydamon might be expected to run his next race in Australia, and as he was shifted to Sydney yesterday by the Man ma the rumour is in a good way to be fulfilled. Ruapapa ran his first races in Auckland in the nomination of Mr. A. Asprey, but in the summer of 1922 he passed into the hands of Mr. Wenzy Scholium, and the local sportsman has good reason to regard with much pleasure the speculation he made in buying the golden chestnut, for under his colours Ruapapa captured stakes to the amount of £6587. As Ruapapa wound up with a brace of wins this month he furnished evidence of being in ft position to reproduce his best form at the back end of his six-year-old career. Several good handicaps figure on the programmes at the Australian Jockey Club's meetings next month, and all continuing to go well with Ruapapa he may be expected to figure among the contestants for winter honours. Thero is stated to be a good prospect of Mr. G. I>. Greenwood again unfurling his colours in Australia when r.e::t season's racin" comes round, but the Canterbury sportsman will not. it is anticipated, have a three-year-old of tho necessary standard to contest the A.J.C. Derby, and, as was stated some time back. Gloaming is now in complete retirement. In the norms of 19-/ Mr Greenwood furnished the respective winners of tho Breeders' Plate and Gimcrack Stakes with Nincompoop and Chignon, and there, is stated to be some grounds for believing that those events will again engage hi 3 attention, for. according to ndvires to hancl R- J- Mason will tako passage to Australia during the coming month with a biaco of promising youngsters in the shape of tho colt bv Limond from Waterwings and the filly bv Absurd from Eulogy, which were secured respectively for S7sgns and lOOOgns at tho sale of tho Koatanui yearling! last February. The Limond colt is a first foal, and his dam ranks as a fullsister to Epitaph nnd Humbug. The filly is a full-sister to Epitaph and Humbug.

It is understood (remarks " Carbine" in thf» New Zealand Times) that Captain Gage Williams, who has been acting as judge for several racing clubs in the Wellington district, is resigning his positions. If this is correct. there will bo important vacancies in the Wellington. Manawatu, and Masterton Racing Clubs and the Wellington Tiotting Club. There is some suggestion that, Captain Williams might take over a team of horses, and it would not be surprising to find him training for Mr. Eric Riddiford the horses iust left by T. Quinlivan. The North Canterbury meeting takes place Ic-tlas. The leading event of the programme is the North Canterbury Handicap (one miie and a-ouarter). in which the following horses ar3 engaged: Deucalion 9.5, T'arlcton B.*?. The Harp 8.2. Rapier 7.5, Prince Ferouz 7.3, Corinthia 7.0, Lady Clarenceux 7.0. Koauau. who led the field home in the Tongahoe Hurdle Race at the Egmont meeting on Thursday, is a six-year-old son of All Red and the Fonnby mare Harmonious. Unless aome - keen judges - are astray in their judgment Koauau is likely to earn further distinction before ho is much older. It was mentioned some little time back that Mr. A. B. Williams had secured the yearling full-brother to the Great Northern Derby and St. Leger winner Star Stranger. The name selected foj the young son ot Martian and Star Lady is Star God. Advices to hand from Wanganui credit Ngata with being in great heart, and the bold manner in which he is galloping encourages the belief that he . will be seen to marked advantago during tho winter meetings. At tho forthcoming conference of country rating club*, convened to be held at Wellington, the Hon. E. W. Alison and Mr, K. Wynyard havo been appointed to represent tho Takamma Jockey Club. Up to tho nrosent Nukumai has won stakes to the valuo of £5395.
