RAILWAY AT GLEN EDEN.
LEVEL CROSSING PROBLEM. CONSIDERATION PROMISED. A deputation from the Glen Eden Town Board consisting of Messrs. J. West and J. H. Hayes, accompanied by Mr. H. G. R. Mason, M P., waited upon the assistant engineer attached to the divisional superintendent of North Island railways, Mr. H. L. P. Smith, with regard to desired railway developments in Glen Eden. The provision of proper safeguards at the school crossing for the protection of the school children was the first matter raised. Mr. Smith admitted that this was a problem, but promised to give the matter careful consideration with a view to the adoption of some system that would meet the situation as far as possible, and report, later. In respect to the very dangerous crossing at Croydon Road, Scroggy Hill, Mr. Mason explained the position and the local requirements, in view of the contemplated reconstruction of the West Coast Road in concrete. Mr* Smith detailed the programme of works which the department had in view toward the development of the North Line. While the request of the deputation for the immediate provision of an overhead bridge at this crossing could not be complied with at present, the installation of a "wig-wag" signal would be considered in the meantime. On the' competition of the present programme of work as far as New Lynn, the matter might, theii be given further consideration. With regard to the question of additional trains stopping at Croydon Road Mr. Smith slated that provision would be made for stopping the 5.13 p.m. train from Auckland at an early date, and probably it might be possible later on to make provision for the 5.7 p.m. train from Newmarket also to stop at Croydon Road.
