DANGER FROM OUTSIDE.
MENACE OF FOREIGN ! DEALS. PREMIER ON BRITISH STRIKE. EXCLUSION OF PROPAGANDA. [Try telegraph.—press association. ] CHRISTCHUIiCH, Wednesday. A note of high optimism regarding the crisis at Homo was struck by tho Primo Minister, Mr. Coates, at a complimentary banqnet tendered last evening to Sir Hcaton Rhodes. " When there is trouble in tho air, said Mr. Coates, " and dark clouds are on tho horizon the usual thing is for the Government to get most of the kicks and blame. Thoro must- be some figurehead at which to direct public opinion. People must have some human being on whom to vent their feelings. New Zealand is a wonderful country with a wonderful people, but> we all must recogniso that tho other fellow's troubles are our troubles. The British people are more or lass a family/' " There are dark clouds 011 the horizon," he proceeded, " and no doubt they will be taken advantage of by those who disagree with tho Government's policy. People will preach that if they have another Government things will be different. We '-xpect criticism, but difficulties and hurdles show what people arc mado of. When troubles come they must be met in a commonsense way, hut we object to the propagation of a creed born in the centre of a country which we do not know and which does not know oav community and its ideals. The Government will do all it can to put down ideals and creeds foreign to our country." Mr. Coates said that the country would do its best to exclude that propaganda and those ideals which were foreign to it and to any truly British community. Wtihin the past few days thousands of people had prayed that the trouble in Great Britain would be ay:rted. It was a heavy load, but whether or not a solution was to be found at once he had faith in human nature and the British people. He hoped the difficulties met would bo faced with credit and thjjt the Empire, with its wonderful heritage, would still go on in its work of bringing peace and understanding among the peoples of the world.
