DAMAGE BY LIGHTNING.
POSITION IN TARANAKI. CONDITIONS NOW IMPROVING. [BY telegraph.—own correspondent. ] NEW PLYMOUTH. Wednesday. A fire was started in the town as the result of lightning striking some telephone wires. On the outskirts of the town a telephone post was split and the lines were broken. Telegraph communication has been maintained by substitute lines. Service cars are maintaining through communication on the main north road, but are the only cars getting through. While on its way to the wash-out at Mahoenni a County Council lorry crashed through a bridge a little south of Piopio and as a result a service car had to make a detour behind the school and ford ths stream. Heavy seas are still raging along . the coast but with the subsidence of the gala this evening the weather has improved. THE WANGANOI IN FLOOD. MAORIS DISCOVER BODY. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN* CORRESPONDENT.] Wednesday. Some Maoris at Putiki* to-day saw the body of an elderly man floating down the river. They secured the body, which was taken to tlio mortuary. No one has been reported missing to the police. The river is still in flood and large quantities of driftwood continue to come down from the back country.
