COLONIAL SUGAR COMPANY. DIVIDEND OF 12£ PER CENT. RECORD AUSTRALIAN CROP. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Heed. 12.25 &.m.) SYDNEY, May 5. The Colonial Sugar Refining Company's report for the half year ended March 31 shows tho net profits at £396,104, of which £195,542 was from earnings in Now Zealand and Fiji- A' dividend and bonus at the rate of 12£ per cent per annum absorbed' £304,687 and £IOO,OOO has been added tc tho reserve fund, raising it to £1,250,000. The amount brought into the account from the previous halfyear was £315,636 and the amount now to be carried forward is £307,053. The report shows that the Australian sugar crops in the past season exceeded provious records. Those at Fiji were much above the average. Prospects for this year are not so good as rains have not been sufficient. It is stated in tho report that the ro* cent fire at Adelaide damaged the works to such an extent that work cannot be resumed before October. Eight apple steamers are due to arrive before next Saturday. The shipowners have arranged to keep the refrigerating machinery running. The strikers will permit a sufficient number of firemen and greasers to remain at work for that purpose. BIG CANADIAN DEVELOPMENT. HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER. MONTREAL. April 23. Tremendous industrial development in the Province of Quebec is foreshadowed by the purchase of the Murmmum Company of America of power sites on the Saguenay River. The electric current will operato Canadian pulp mills, and will be transmitted as far as New York City. A syndicate of banks underwrote an issne of £7,400,000 to handle the project. PROFITS IN SOAP. LEVER BROTHERS' BIG TURNOVER. LONDON, April 23. Presiding at a mpeting of Lever Bros., Ltd., the chairman. Sir J. A. Cooper, said that the year's turnover of the parent and 200 associated companies .exceeded £81,000,000.
