AMERICA AND THE LEAGUE. SUPPORT FOR WORLD COURT. (Received 5.5 n-in) Keutcr. WASHINGTON, April 8. With the President, Mr. Calvin Cooliclge, the principal speaker, the 'first Pan-American Congress of Journalists embarked on Thursday upon a study of the various problems confronting the press. ,Twenty-one republics are represented with a view'to working for better understanding among their nations. Tn laying the corner-stone of a home costing £2,000,000, which is to ho erected here for the National Press Club, the President referred to the country's presti as " one of the corner-stones of liberty." Discussing the League, of Nations, Mr. Cooli rige said the United States hod refused to adhere to the organisation because it wished " to refrain front interfering in the political affairs of others. It will he of great benefit if the people can be informed that we take part in the administering of international justice because it affects ;ls. We do not become involved in the political controversies of oilier countries because thoy are none of our affairs." 1 Referring to the recent decision of the United States to adhere with reservations to the World Court, Mr. Coolidge said:— " Onr Government- has taken this step because it believes it was the most practical method by which it could exercise Its great influence toward establishing the principle of the reign of international law, under which disputes anil differences would be adjusted not by force but by reason."
