UNIVERSITY DEBATES.
Sir,—When the students selected to take part in these intellectual contests spend weeks in preparing their speeches and travel a, few hundred miles to display their prowess under such conditions as those reported from Dunedin, is it not time those in authority took some decisive action to have the debates conducted in a manner less disheartening to the contestants and those who attend for the appreciation of intellectual ability? The same element was present, though in a minor degree, at the last contest in Auckland, but fortunately for those concerned, the chairman possessed sufficient force of character to quell the unseemly interrupters. University fun and frolic within the bounds of propriety is good, but there is a time and place for it; these are not at a university debating contest. N.Z..
