UPKEEP OF ROADS.
THE FRANKLIN COUNTY. ATTITUDE OF MOTORISTS. [by TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PUKEKOHE, Friday. A suggestion made at last month's meeting of the Franklin County Council that to meet tho increasing cost of maintenance of metalled roads a local tax on motor-cars would have to be considered was discussed at a meeting of the executive of tho Franklin branch of tho Auckland Automobile Association. Mr. G. T. Proude said he thought the matter should be watched. Most owners of cars in the county already contributed heavily in rates and motor tax toward road maintenance. Other members agreed that the suggestion called for the attention of motorists. The president, Dr. C. H. Wake, added that motor transport had increased enormously of late years, but road construction had not kept pace. "If further tax is going to bo collected," he said, "motorists should at least ask for something for the money." Mr. W. A. Giles: 1 don't think the motorists of New Zcal.ind would object to the English tax, £.l per horse-power per annum, if they were given as good roads as the English motorists. It was agreed members of the association should question candidates on the matter vat tho forthcoming County Council elections.
