SEASON'S FIXTURES.

A Dr ;| •>> Waipapakauri Racing Club Whunaarei). Annl 24—Whsnsarei Racinz Club. May 1. 3—Waikato Racing Club. NOTES BY PHAETON. Yaward. who won the Opunake Cup last "Wednesday, is a three-year-old son of Bisogne. Bent, winner of the Maiden Plate at Opunake. is a three-year-old filly by Cyntoi from Sweet Van (a daughter of Sweet Simon). It is stated that "George Young's successful rido on Pilliewinkio in the Australian Gup brought an addition oi iMOOO to his banking account.

The Camp Fire gelding Yoma, who carried top weight . (9st. 41b.), was sent out favourite for tho Opunake Cup, run last Wednesday. He is stated to have been up ■with the leaders at the head of the straight, but the finish found him in fifth position.

The veteran Rational is not yet to be regarded as a back number. In the decision of the St. Patrick's Handicap at Opunake on Wednesday he made a good dash for victory under 9st. lib., and he was only defeated by a neck by Merry Jest, to •whom he was conceding 2-1 lb.

It is slated that there is a good prospect of Glentruin being transported to Ellerslie tfith a view to autumn engagements. In addition to engagements in the Easter Handicap and th© Huia Handicap at the A.R.C. meeting. the chestnut mare figures among the number paid ud for in the All-Aged Stakes, to be run at the Avondale meeting, in "which race she has incurred the maximum 10lb penalty.

A five-year-old gelding competing in the South Island under the name of Scamp viewed in a promising light as a steeplechaser. Scamp is a descendant of the Kilcheran horse Kilrain, who will be best remembered for his victory in the Wellington Cud of 1914. An interesting feature in scamp's pedigree on the dam's side ia the in-, breeding to the Musket line, three strains of the blood coming to him in close order respectively through All Red, Pnaethon, and Artillery.

Serang. the three-year-old full-brother to Loyal Irish, is not proving sc. good a speculation to Mr. T. Impey as did his relative ■to Mr. J. Williamson. So far Serang has only managed to capture £6O in prize-money (£3O for a third and a similar sum for second). When bought as a yearling Serang cost. SSOgns. so that it will be seen he has to accomplish a good deal ere he is on the right side of the ledger. Everyone ■would be glad to find Serang developing form in keeping with his high breeding, for, Mr. Impey well deserves to own a good horse.

Incidents cf the uniaue order are, of course, to be expected at country meetings which take the form of " picnic" gatherings. At the Otamatea meeting on Wednesday two of the contesting horses -were called Tipcm to run three Taces during the day. Bowman led off by winning the Ruawai Handicap; in the next race, the Maungaturoto Handicap, Clockwork made his appearance, and, though beaten in hollow style, he was saddled up to contest the Otamatea Cup. in which he met Bowman, and that pair ran a dead-heat. In the next race Bowman and Clockwork were saddled up to contest the Matakohe Welter Handicap. Bowman got home first, while Clockwork finished third.

The death of the jockey F. Lloyd as the result of an accident while schooling a horse at Riccarton last Saturday adds one more to the list of racecourse fatalities in the Dominion. ' The gelding Naughty Peter, on ■whom Lloyd had the mount, failed to rise lit one of the schooling hurdles, and in falling he landed on top of his rider, who ■was injured internally. Lloyd was at once conveyed to the hospital. where an immediate operation was performed, but the poor fellow only survived a few hours. In referring to the death of Lloyd the Sun remarks:—"The deceased, who was in his nineteenth year, was an unassuming lad, oI a. cheery disposition, and was very popular among his associates. He was a native of Gisborne."

In referring to Pilliewinkie's autumn engagements and the prospects of the New Zealand-bred gelding being on hand at Rand wick to oppose Windbag in the weight-for-i»ge events at the Australian Jockey C}ub'a meeting next month " Beacon." of the Melbourne Leader, remarks:—"ln the spring Windbag' beat Pilliewinkis three times at weight-for-age at Randwick, but the latter beat Windbag bo4h times, they met in that class of race at the Melbourne Cup meeting. There might bo a different story to tell when the pair meet again at the Sydney Cup meeting. Pilliewinkie has been used to racing in • New Zealand on lefthanded courses, and going the reverse way at Sydney bothered him. • He might be more adaptable this time, having had some experience on right-handed going, and, if he can accommodate himself to that way of galloping, he will seriously discount the prospects of Windbag in the long weight-for-age races at Randwick next month,"
