HOMES FOR TEACHERS.
"VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM." MORE COTTAGES ADVOCATED. Difficulty is being experienced by the Wellington Education Board in securing accommodation for assistant teachers at Shannon. The matter has been under discussion between the board and the Education Department, and a letter bearing upon it was read at this week's meeting of the board.
The department stated that in several instances it had been found on inquiry that the assistant teachers had been unreasonable in their requirements, and had not troubled to accommodate themselves to the family circumstances of the people they were staying with. In general, a girl who was sufficiently tactful and reasonable had not much difficulty in getting accommodation. This reply provoked expressions of surprise from members of the board. The acting-chairman, Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P., said he regretted that no progress whatever had been made in the matter. Really, he remarked, it was a very serious problem, which the department would liave to meet in some way or other sooner or later, even if it had to build more cottages. It was quite inconvenient for many farmers to take in boarders, for the hours of teaching did not always coincide satisfactorily with those of the household.
