STRENGTH OF NAVY.
A REASSURING STATEMENT. STANDARD TO BE MAINTAINED. LONDON, Dec. 22. The Times to-day publishes correspondence which has passed between the Navy League and tho First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr. W. C. Bridgeman. The Marquess of Linlithgow, president, and Sir Cyril Cobb, M.P., on behalf of tho League, wrote stating that, while the League fully appreciated the necessity for prudent economy in naval expenditure, it viewed with grave alarm the recent and' projected reductions in the strength of the fleet. . , _ ' ■ ■. Mr. Bridgeman, in replying, emphasised the point that the navy was not being reduced below the- safety limit. He pointed out th&t the' "onb Power standard" applies . only to capital ships and aircraftcarriers, and that the number and tonnage of these is fixed by tho terms of the Washington Treaty, from which the Government has no intention of departing. "The League," tho Minister added, "may rest assured that the Board of Admiralty will advise the Government to resist any proposals for reductions in tho strength of the fleet which are incompatible with the security of the Empire and its sea communications."
