IMPORTS INCREASING.

THE TRADE OF AUCKLAND. PROGRESS DURING THE YEAR. POSITION OF GERMAN GOODS. , Importations of almost every kind of manufactured goods into the port of Auckland increased during 1925, as compared with 1924. Although the trade of the port has not been abnormal it has shown a sieady increase. Inquiries made at the Customs Department on Thursday disclosed that although the German trade is growing steadily after the war, it is by no means large. From the public point of view, . importations. of German goods may look large because they consist of such things as toys and fancy goods—articles that naturally attract iho attention of the people. The great bulk of the imports, however, como from Great Britain and the United States. The importation.*: of motor vehicles during 1925 increased about .10 per cent, on the importations for 1924. It is estimated that the total value of motor vehicles imported into the Dominion during 1925 will approximate £4,000,000. There ar£ many new makes coming on to the market, and this in some measure has accounted for the increase. It is expected that the importations of tyres during 1925 will be nearly doubled as compared with the previous 12 months. The importation of electrical machinery into the port of Auckland has been well maintained. In view of hydro-electric development it is confidently anticipated that the importations will increase greatly during the next few years. Importations of tobacco and spirits have also been well maintained. The rate of duty on tobacco during 1925 was 8d per lb. less than during 1924, but on account- of increased importations the' revenue for 1925 has not depreciated to any great extent. The importation of sugar has shown a. fair increase. This is no doubt duo to the advance of the jam and preserving industry. Importations of drapery; soft goods and motor spirit all show a marked increase.
