FIRE ON THE MANUKA.

THE DAMAGE NOT SERIOUS. COMPANY WITHDRAWS VESSEL. VALUABLE RAMS SMOTHERED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN. Thursday. The firo on the steamer Manuka was speedily extinguished. The operations were hampered by the dense black smoke created by the burning rubber of the tyres composing the cargo at the seat of the outbreak. The origin of the flames remains a mystery. Four valuable rams from Melbourne were smothered. They had been shipped at Bluff to be transferred at Wellington for conveyance to the Argentine. They were insured for £BOOO. The structural damage to the vessel is practically nil. Several bales of flax were -soaked by water and some cases containing motor-cars were charred, but no damage was done to the vehicles. Over 50 passengers from Melbourne booked to Wellington transferred to the Mararoa, which left this morning. Some Lyttelton passengers went North by rail. The Union Steam Ship Company advises that the Moeraki will be despatched from Wellington for Melbourne on January 5, via Southern ports. The Manuka is being withdrawn from the service in the meantime. The crew aro being paid off to-day and the vessel will bo cleaned up.-
