RIFLE SHOOTING.
AUCKLAND MEETING OPENS. ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS RESULTS OF THE MATCHES. The fifty-second annual prize meeting of the Auckland Rifle Association was opened at the Penrose range yesterday, and will be concluded to-day. Conditions were the very reverse of ideal, a strong and gusty wind blowing directly across the range. The light was changeable and rain fell at intervals. Tho force of the wind may be judged from the fact that the secretary's tent was ripped and finally blown to tho ground. However, there was some excellent shooting, seven competitors securing tho possible in the first match. The attendance of country competitors proved disappointing, although dty clubs were as well represented as usual. The meeting was ably organised by the president, Mr. S. Elliott, and the secretary, Mr. G. Hughes. Captain Willoughby aud Mr. C. Simpson acted as range officers. All matches, except the service match, which was fired under service conditions, were under National Exile .Association rules which permit the use of slings, windgauges and aperture sights. Owing to the adverse circumstances the Avondale match, which v*»s to have been fired yesterday afternoon, was postponed and will commence promptly at eight o'clock this morning.
