NEW YEAR DANCE.
. / ■ • • •>:/." >'■ '■' <:• i - FESTIVE GATHERING. ' v~ New Year was ushered in with good cheer and much merriment at the Masonic Hall, Princes Street, on New Yeor's Eve when a very happy gathering assembled at the invitation of Mr. G. Bassant, manager of the Grand Hotal, and Mr. R. Cbesney, manager of the Hotel Cargen. A spirit of carnival and hearty good-fellow-ship marked the occasion, and the festivity reached its height at twelve o'clock when the 'hall was thrown into darkness and a fanfare of trumpets announced the hour which was struck from an illuminated clock suddenly revealed from obscurity with mysterious deftness. In accompaniment to a merry <3in the strains of "Auld Lang Syne" were heard, and soon the lights went up on a merry company in which the gala note was accentuated by the gay caps, coloured fans and other -juaint, novelties which had been distributed. The fun of the evening culminated in the bursting overhead of a large snowball, from which fell countless balls which were caught and thrown hither and thither across the ballroom. The hall was artistically decorated with panels of massed green leaves and drapings in tones of orchid and cyclamen. Overhead the electroliers were covered with fringed shades 'in delicate mauve tints,, which effectively enhanced the pretty frocking of the guests.
