BOWLING TOURNAMENT.

THE CHRISTMAS MEETING. SUCCESS OF CARLTON TEAM. TRUSCOTT'S SECOND VICTORY. The final of the Auckland Bowling Centre's Christmas tournament was played on the Carlton green on Thursday, .when ' Clarkson, Coutts, Ball and ,T. Truscott (Carlton) defeated Kennedy, Green, Schnackenberg and E. Wright .(Onehunga), by 22 points to 20 after .a splendid game. Six teams out of 60 remained in the competition when play was commenced in the morning, and at the luncheon adjournment J. Truscott. (Carlton), J. Kilgour (Carlton), F. Laurenson (Carlton) and E. Wright (Onehunga) were still in the running. Truscott, who was the only 'skip without a loss in the inter-section play, defeated Kilgour by 22 to 14, and Wright eliminated Laurenson, 21 to 18. Truscott scored heavily at the beginning of the final, and Wright looked to have a forlorn chance, but he rallied in characteristic style, and, ably supported by his team, scored on several successive ' heads to fully extend Truscott. The winning team showed up as a fine combination and well deserved its success. Truscott, who was always in the •limelight, won the event in 1922, Clarkson and Ball being members of his team on that occasion also. Great Game in Fourth Round. In the fourth round the meeting of Baildon, Livcrsedge, Whittle and E. Buckleys (Grey Lynn) and Kennedy, Green, Schnackenberg and E. Wright (Onehunga) provided • perhaps the greatest .fighting game of.the tournament. For three and a-half hours the teams contested every inch of the way, and, irrespective of any other feature, made the game remarkable for the fact that there were no fewer than six successive burnt heads. The score was eight all at the 11th head and 10 all at the 15th. Buckley had an advantage of three at the 17th, but Wright scored a seven on the next, which put him in front by 17 to 13. Buckley burnt four heads in succession at the 19th, and Wright retaliated on the replay. Not to be 'outdone Buckley did likewise at the second replay, but Wright eventually scored three, to make the score 20 to 13 in his favour. Buckley replied with a five on the next, but could only obtain one on the final head, Wright thus earning a fine 'Victory by 20 to 19. The veteran Onehunga lead, Kennedy, was undoubtedly responsible in no small measure for the team's success. Brittain, Cotterell, Snedden and J. , Kilgour (Carlton) defeated Campbell, Mclnness, Brackebush and A. , Parsons S (Ponsonby) by 18 to 12. The contest was fa.irly even until the 13th head, when Kilgour led 12 to 10. On the next four heads Kilgour scored singles, and the next two brought singles to Parsons. Kilgour played a fine game and saved • his side repeatedly by excellent drawing; Clarkson, Coutts, Ball and J. Truscott (Carlton), by all-round consistency, were far too strong for their club mates, Stevens, Josey, Graham and F. Laurenson. Tho latter gave up on the 2pth head with a score 22 to 11 against them. A three and a two gave Luurenson early confidence, but. Truscott evened on the sixth head, and his opponent was able to add points only on five succeeding heads. Play in the Semi-Final. The two Carlton teams, skipped by Truscott and Kilgour, we're evenly matched for the early part of their game iu the semi-final, and each had scored eight, points at the ninth head. A three at the tenth and fours at the 13th and 16th assured Truscott's success, and he won by 22 to 14, the game concluding on the 20th. Wright (Onehunga) and Laurenson (Carlton), had an exceptionally close game on the adjoining rink and finished some time later. At the second head Wright scored a three and added another at the fourth to lead by three. Twos on three alternate heads were countered by Laurenson scoring a five at the 14th, and the board then registered a lead of one to Wright. Laurenson failed to add a point on the next five heads; but he then secured a three, followed by a single at the 21st to make the score 18 'all.- An extra head was played and Wright notched a three to' win by 21 'to 18.' • - \ The Final Contest. The green was fast for the final between Truscott. and Wright. The former scored one on the first head and burnt the second to lay three until Schnackenberg scattered the bowls and. enabled Wright to get the shot for a single. Wright drove in the third head when lying one up and gave Truscott five. Truscott lay two on the next when Schnackenbeag drew shot, but the latter was succeeded by a promoted Carlton bowl and Truscott gained another single. Entering on the fifth head, Truscott was six points ahead and Clarkson sent down a " toucher " to make the outlook even brighter. In an effort to move the shot bowl, Wright took his own back instead, and Truscott received three more points. 'Another single came his : way on the sixth, and although. Ball promoted an Onehunga bowl on the seventh, Truscott it for a five. Wright drew shot with his first and rpeated his performance with the second to turn a dangerous situation to his advantage and scored three. Truscoft continued to score, and at the 12th head he was leading by 20 to 4. Onehunga then began their remarkable recovery. The. 13th gave tliem a four. The-next head was burnt by Wright and he obtained one from a replay. He again resorted to spoiling tactics on the 15th, which produced a single to Truscott on the - replay. At the following head .Schnackenberg drew the shot and Wright added another to make the score 21 to 11 with five heads to go. Wright's Plucky Uphill Fight. Still fighting determinedly, Wright added a two at the next. Green, who was displaying consistently good form, drew pride of place at the beginning of the 18th, and Schnackenberg added points with each of his bowls. Ball endeavoured to burn the head, but gave his opponent's a fourth point. This was deducted when Truscott drove, but Wright regained it and lay four. He had scored 13 points as against Truscott's one. Once again Green drew shot for Onehunga, but Truscott replaced him and the umpire's measurement gave Truscott a single. Green found the shot on.the 20th head, but Ball played, a very delicate bowl to displace him. Schnackenberg drove and took out the shot bowls to leave, •Onehunga two counters and Wright got a third." Ilowover, Truscott drove one out. Entering on the 21st head Wright was three points behind Truscott's 22. Wright lay one up when he, took his turn, but he was unable to improve the situation, and a fine came ended in a victory for Truscott by 22 to 20. The banner was preesented to the winners by the centre president, Mr. J. Pasco, 0 , who congratulated them on their good play.
