DOMINION'S TRADE.

EXPORT BALANCE REDUCED. EFFECT OF SHIPPING STRIKE, HEAVY SPRING IMPORTATIONS. A decline of £600,000 in the apparent favourable balance is shown by the returns of the Dominion's external trade for the ten months ended October 31. This is directly duo to the seamen's strike from the last week in August to the end of October, exports having been so severely curtailed that the total for September and October, £3,194,232, was less by £2,042,496 than that for the corresponding months of 1924. Exports during October were valued at £1,958,691, a decline of £968,407 from the value in October, 1924. Imports at £4,745,369 show an increase of £662,698. There is normally a much greater volume of importation than of exportation during the .spring months. This year the disparity has been inflated by the curtailment of exports. Following are the returns for the four months, .July to October, in the last two years: — Ju!y-Oct. 1925. 1924. Exports .. £7,751,686 £10,428,312 Imports .. 17,964,891 17,576,024 Excess .. £ 10,213,205 ' £7,152.712 Exports during the 10 months ended October 31 were valued at £46,149,945, an increase of £2,165,639 over the 1924 total. Imports totalled £42,980,176, an increase of £2,759,749. The apparent favourable balance was therefore £3,169,769, or £594,110 less than that for the corresponding period of 1924.
