PICNIC AT PATUMAHOE.

THE MERCER RAILWAYMEN. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] MERCER. Monday. The annua! picnic of the Mercer railway staff was held at Mr. Membry's paddock, Fatumahoe. on Sunday. Fully 400 people were present, passengers joining the train at every station along the line. Satisfactory arrangements for the picnic had been made by Messrs. H. Lechner, chairman, F. Skeen, secretary, and a strong committee. A big list of prizes was provided for the sports, and there was a toy for every little child. The train was manned by a staff of voluntary workers. The chief events were:—120vds. Sheffield Handicap (railway) ; First heat— Dance, 1; Leigh ton, 2; Walmsley, 3. Second heat—Cunnold, 1; Long, 2; A. Smith, 3. Final —W. Cunnold, 1; ,1. Long, 2.
