CANTERBURY FLOODS.
A RESORT THREATENED. TVyO HUTS SWEPT AWAY. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH. Monday. The Waimakariri River flood created a serious situation at Kaianga, a week-end settlement at Stewart's Gully. The flood washed away the groyne at this place, and since then the river has been eating away the bank. About six o'clock yesterday morning it became evident tint, as tho result of continued erosion, some of the huts were in serious danger of being washed away. The occupiers were roused, and furniture and other moveables were got out. Two of the huts were swept down the river. The secretary to the Waimakariri River Trust said last night that the river was threatening to cut right through the settlement, and, in his opinion, there was not one hut there safe. Kaianga is a popular week-end resort with between 60 and 70 huts. The river has fallen and all immediate danger is past.
