INJURIES PROVE FATAL.
DEATH OF SAMUEL WALLS.
FALL IN STEEPLECHASE.
The death of Mr. Samuel Walls, jockey, occurred yesterday morning at the Auckland Hospital.
While riding the gelding Rafferty in the Hunters' Steeplechase at Ellerslie last Saturday week, Mr. Walls suffered a severe fall as the result of his horse failing to negotiate one of the fences properly. Further than that the jockey had a cut over his right eyebrow. Ho seemed to be little the worse for his mishap and he rode on the second day of the meeting. However, an attack of tetanus supervened. Mr. Walls, who was 25 years of age, had on many occasions proved himself to be a most courageous horsemen. During his career lie stered a good number of winners. One of his most important successes was gained on General Advance in the New Zealand Grand National Hurdle Race of 1923.
The funeral will take place in Wellington, where Mr. Walls' parents reside. An inquest was opened yesterday, before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., and was adjourned after evidence of identification had been given.
