CANTERBURY MEETING.

NEW ZEALAND GUP DAY. VICTORY FOR THE BANKER. OUTSIDER WINS STEWARDS. [by telegraph.---own CORRESPONDENT. 3 CHRISTCHUKCiI, Saturday. The conditions were, far from ideal for tho opening of tin? spring racinir carnival. After a ape 11 of fmo weather there was n change on Friday nior)dn,';-~a cold southerly wind brinstiro; frequent showers of rain, while late at tiis.ht there was a light fall of snow. This morning broke line, but there were threatenim: clouds. These disappeared later, but though the sun made its appearance the cold wind was in evidence most of the afternoon. There was a very large attendance, including' the usual representative Blithering of sportsmen from North and South. The rain did no harm to tiie race track. In fact it just served to take the still-; out of tho ground. From a racm;.; point of vmvv it, was a highly successi itl day. The fields wore large, and the sport was full of excitement, there being several exft til!: iinishea. Th» Spring Hurdle Handicap provided a d.'a.maiie finish. En Route was in front most of tho way and looked a sure winner till a couple of strides from tho post, when he stopped .suddenly. Sir Familul banting him by a bead, while Bonecto was a neck away with Frinco Mail a head further back. It trauspued later that Ln Koute's saddle commenced to slip hall a mile from home, and Seobio was unable to mine on him at tho finish, tint tor the mishap tie would have won eusiiy. i; ax.: was matte a warm buounte for the Spring Plate, but after being well placed to the straight he tailed to improve bus position. Tiega made most, ox the running, Put, he v, as I .-eaten er a furlong from home where Beacon Ligho went on and won decisively fiom fttar Stranger, who unished like a stayer after being unlucky m the early stages. . Tito Lin wood handicap was run m divi_siotis. ln the first division i.Ylegalo and Voiant made the early ruiiriing, but. First Acre and .Minotnß cut them down at the distance and had tho finish to theiiiwlvw. Aftnotus winning decisively. The second division saw Corn Money, Arpent und N"tola riiiii in front for nearly five furlongs, when Polyphemus shot through and won with ridiculous ease from Arpent, while Gay Queen finished well in third place. Polyphemus was well backed, but Alieotus paid a great dividend. Both of them will inipro ve The Banker's Cup Victory. The New Zealand C'up provided an exciting finish, but only between three horses, the remainder of the tiebl being hopelessly beaten three furlongs from home. Count Cavonr and Te Kara were always-; in the front division, while The Banker commenced to move up gradually from the six furlong post. He followed the other pair to the straight, and caught them at that distance, where he had the race won. His margin at the finish was only half a length, but it could have been inci eased if it had been necessary. After a great struggle To Kara '•eat .■Count Cavonr by a head for second money. Tho best ridden horse won, and equally patient tactics on either of the other pair might have produced a different result. Waetea ran a. good race for over a j milo and a-half, while Tamidees and Merry ! Day were prominent for nearly that distance. Kulakatui. Shining Armour, Tiesham and Ravonno tinted out earlier. Ret', enna might have gone on further with a rider who could have managed her. Deneaboti and Kilfairo never showed up Eight yonnestera turned out in tho Welcome Stakes to oppose Commendation, who was a hot iavourite. Scrip and her stable tna'e Bachelor were the early leaders, but Commendation *.vt<s never far away and he took charge two furlongs from borne, going on to win us he liked by three lengths from r l he _ Tractor filly Pink Terrace, who beat Limited by a length, with Countersign "est. Bachelor shaped very badly. 'the Apprentices' Handicap was not, an _e.xc;tir,g race, Kiirniss was a strong favourite, but though she put up a good performance she never looked like b,eating Centrepiece. Tho Riccarton three-year-old tooK charge early, led the favourite to the straight arid bent her home easily, with Enure finishing fast in (bird nine©, just in tront r ; tho tiring Philanderer, The winner only has to keen sound to win better races for he stays well. Surprise of the Day. Money Order_ was n hot favourite for the Stewards' Handicap, in suite of drawing the extreme outside at the barrier. Victory Bond who was on the rails, began smartly, but Alouey Order, with a wonderful burst ol speed, sooi; crossed over, and joined her in. the lead, Mireuaouta and Overdrawn being prominent in the bunch behind them after going two furlongs, while a little further oil Inferno und Pencils and Comic Song also appeared on the scene. Victory Bond only katod half a mile, while Mireusonta and Peneus alao faded out below the distance. Comic Song, finishing with a brilliant run, bent Overdrawn by nearly a length, while Inferno close up, bent. Money Order by a head. The winner v/us tho outsider of the field, and paid a three-figure dividend. Overdrawn ran a great race after being badly placed in the first furlong. Inferno put up u fine performance. Licinius and Circulation wore both finishing well, but Mimetic never looked dangerous, nor was Ilka ever sighted. Money Order ia a phenomenally speedy galloper. The, Stewards' Handicap would have beer, an easy '■'■' in for him had he drawn an inside posi tit 'ti. The concluding event, the Riccarton Welter Handicap, found Footfall, Happy Bays and Winkie'a Best backed in that order, 'i hey filled the places, but with Winkle':'. Best an easy winner. Ho was in front at the end of u furlong, and after shaking off Pernio, who accompanied him to tho straight, he never looked in danger of defeat. Foothd! took seamd place in Idle straight, and neb! it, while Happy Lays came along late to beat Viewpoint for third money in the iasi stride. There was an inquiry after the Stewards' Handicap. A steward, who was stationed two l uriorigs from the start reported F. C. ! 'orter, the rider ot .vloriey Order, for crossing (lie field. Porter was suspended for the remainder of the meeting. This will mean ii-, new rider for Money Order and Count ( avotir. Mr. G. 1). Greenwood, who had ( oupon_ in tho Limvood Handicap, was fined 15 ior failing to notify an interest in Goldtown. who was engaged in tho same race Phantasy and Grey Kyes fell soon after the. start of the nftcoiid division of the Limvood Handicap. E. J, Mooro, rider of Grey Kyes, was taken to the hospital suffering !rr, m a broken leg, while S. Wilson received some bruises An inquiry into the accident was adiourned. Three of Cntts Brothers' apprentices rode winners to-day, C. Eastwood was on Beacon Light, W. Brown on Comic Song und G Stilt oil Centrepiece, white in "this lastnamed race, Eastwood and Brown rode the second ami third horses. Mr. J. S. Barrett must look on the New Zealand Cup as his unlucky race. His horse Poo Chow was second to Scion three years ar;o, M id a year later Dame Straitlace," who also earned his colours, ran Rouen to a bead, while ting year bis representative, Count favour, ran third.
