BRIDGE SPAN COLLAPSES.
OCCURRENCE AT TAUPAKt. LORRY DRIVER GETS THRILL. One span of the Taupaki Bridge collapsed last Thursday just as a rnotorlorry got clear of that section. The lorry also went through the decking at the other end of the bridge, but the stringers saved it from a fall of 15ft. into the creek below. The lorry was later jacked up and towed off the bridge by its owner, Mr. VV. Lovett, carrier, Grey Lynn. The bridge being down, the TaupakiBrigham's Creek road, a fairly important connecting road, is at present closed to traffic. The bridge was 30ft. long and was very old. The driver was fortunate as the span commenced to give while he was on it. It collapsed behind him and the wheels of the lorry went through the decking of the remaining span. There it remained fast until assistance arrived.
