[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCIIURCH, Saturday. The response mado by owners last night, leaves 110 doubt as lo the success of the Canterbury Jockey Club's spring meeting. With 2G horses left in the New Zealand Clip and 32 in the Stewards' Handicap there is material for two great contests, especially i as quality is well represented in both events, i A specially pleasing feature of both races is j that North Island horses figure very prominently. There are plenty of visitors also ill the minor events, so_ that everything points to the week's racing being of the highest class. The New Zealand Cup bears a very open appearance, and the same remark may also be applied to the Stewards' Handicap. None of the racing witnessed . this season has shown us any horse who is entitled to do a strong favourite for either race Red Wink has not done well lately, which will account for his withdrawal from the New Zealand Cup. He looks as if he needed a spell. , , . , Clareina is in fine fettle, and she will bear watching in her Riccarton engagements. The three-year-old. Money Order, has gone on well since he returned from the Dunedin meeting, and it will take a good horse to beat him. He has only been a mile so far, but there is no reason why he should not go further. , . .. , The imported mare. Glentrum. continues to shape well in her track work find she should win good races later on. She may, however, be below her best fomr-<at Riccarton. The withdrawal of Nigger Minstrel from Riccarton engagements was a disappointment, and a further shock comes in the news that Gold Light is also amiss. The absence of this pair next month will take a lot ot interest out of more than one race. Barn Owl was unable to race _ at irentham, having gone sore, but she, is all right again, and is likely to shape well in early engagements. , , . , • r Tiff has not been pleasing his trainer tor some time, and his absence from the New Zealand Cup acceptances was quite ex : peeled. He may be given a bit. of racing in minor events, 'though even that is not certain, but he will not be seen m big races till the autumn. . . Haze has been going oil well m his work since he returned from Sydney, but ins tasks have not been such as would he expected from a horse that R. J. Mason had in preparation for the New Zealand J- up. He is fairly sound, though he moves a trifle short at times. Probably he will have a couple of easy races, and if he stands up | to hi 3 work he may be a useful Auckland Cup candidate. „ r , , , The running at the North Canterbury meeting on Labour Day should provide a good guide to the prospects of several horses in important Riccarton events The three-year-old filly Chignon (by Absurd from Lady D), who had been amiss for some time, became so weak that she could not rise when she got down in her box and she was destroyed. Ibe filly won the Gimcrack Stakes in Sydney for Mr I Greenwood a year ago, and she was placed j in her three engagements oil her return.
