CYCLING ROAD RACE.

FIFTY MILES CHAMPIONSHIP. WON BY F. HERBERT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] GISBORNE, Thursday. The 50-mile amateur cycling road championship of New Zealand was decided today. The weather was overcast, with a head wind for the "first 19 miles of the second lap. The first lap was over a course of about 12 miles, the competitors returning to the town and setting out on the second lap, about 38 miles. There were five starters: C. Flett (Wellington), A. W. Day (Canterbury), and J. Algie, F. Herbert and J. Douglas (Gisborne). i In conjunction with the championship a handicap race was held. In this ten started. After going six miles Douglas had a puncture and fell out. On fuming for the second lap Day was in the lead of the championship men, a length ahead of Flett. with Algie and Herbert following. The four men turned practically together at To Karaka and remained in- a bunch till a mile from home. Here Herbert and Flett drew out. Three hundred yards from the tape Herbert spurted and secured a two-lengths lead from Flett, which he retained till the post was passed. Algie was third. 20vds. back, with Day another 20vds. away fourth. Herbert's time was 2h! 35m 95.. Flett's 2h. 35m. 9 2-55., and Alsrie's 2h 35m 12s. Forrester (Canterbury). Curtis (Levin), Cooper (Wellington), Baker (Auckland), and Harcourt (Auckland), did not reach Gisborne in time to start.
