ADVANCE IN FOOD PRICES.
HIGHER THAN LAST YEAR. NOTABLE INCREASE IN MEAT. The retail prices of food in August were 52.1 per cent, higher than in July, 1914; in August last year the increase was 46.26 per cent. The increase dar:ig the past year is chiefly due to higher prices for meat Groceries are cheaper, due to the fall in the price of sugar; dairy produce is dearer as the price of eggs has fallen more slowly this year than last; while meat prices afe 13 per cent, higher than in August, 1924, this great increase being ascribed to the enhanced prices for meat prevailing in the world's markets. " Despite the recent notable increases in the prices of meat," says the Government Statistician, " the meat group still shows a smaller increase over pre-war prices than does the dairy produce and, a fortiori, than does the groceries group. Comparison of the latest index numbers with those for July, 1914, shows that the increase in the meat group has been 44 per cent.; in the dairy produce group 50 per cent., and in the groceries group bo per cent. •
