THE COUNTRY PARTY.

Sir,—Regarding Mr. Mellsop's letter in Monday's Herald it is only fair that the public should know the extent of my connections with the Labour Party at the Franklin by-election. I acted as "chairman :<t Mr. Montgomerie's meeting and asked him to my house to have some supper afterwards. Mr. Montgomerie and I are South African war veterans arid olcl friends and I am not narrow enough to cut that friendship on account of political views. I am quite willing to extend the same courtesy to Mr. McLennan or Mr. Rhodes, but that does not necessarily say that I am openly supporting them. C. C. MrJteo.
