TRAINING OF THE CHILDREN VALUE OF YOUTH MOVEMENTS, [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION. ] HASTINGS, Thursday. At the citizen's reception at Cornwall Park yesterday the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, devoted much of his speech to the subject of children's welfare. Vice-Regal visits, he said, were necessarily short, but it gave them an opportunity of seeing most of the child ren and bo would say without any desire to please that they were children of which they and New Zealand should be proud. They had seen the children of both islands, and had been invariably struck with their look of well-being, happiness, care and training. These children were well worth consideration, as they were going to be the men and women who would make or mar New Zealand in the years to come. As the towns enlarged and the population increased, they would De confronted with industrial problems of which tnev had now but little experience. What could be done to meet those problems. They must uphold the traditions of New Zealand, " self-reliance, industry, determination to succeed and loyalty to Empire and King." The only way to preserve these traditions was to devote careful attention to the upbringing of the youth of the country. There were many ways to help our youth, and the responsibility rested on the people to educate the children in the great traditions of their country, without which the Empire would fall to pieces. He appealed to them to give every support they could to movements making for the training of youth.
