LIVING IN A WHARE.
TRIALS OF LADY TEACHERS. GRANT FOR COTTAGE REFUSED. "What becomes of these girls? Would the senior inspector allow his daughter to live in a rough workman's whare at the side of the road?" asked Mr. F. A. Snell at yesterday's meeting of the Auckland Education Board, when a letter was received from the department stating that the application for a grant for a small residence for two lady teachers at Kakapuka, i.e., To Awamutu, must stand over. The reason given was that a three-roomed cottage could not be built for less than £4OO. Members agreed that a two-roomed cottage would meet, the case, as if was obvious the teachers could not be permitted to live under the present makeshift conditions. "We can easily do it for £2OO or £250," said a member. " The Railway Department is putting up places for £100!" It was decided that application should be renewed for a grant of £250.
