MOTOR NUMBER PLATES.

i QUESTION OF LOCAL SUPPLY.j THE QUOTATIONS TOO HIGH, j i I [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] . HAMILTON. Wednesday. | The desire of the Minister for Internal Affairs to encourage local trade in connection w-.th the manufacture of number j plates for motor-cars lias been frustrated j by the inability of local manufacturers to compete with foreign trade. .Speaking at Taupiri the Minister, Hon R. I'- Bollard, said he had called for tenders for this ( year's plates, which wen to lie coloured j black and white. He was prepared to allow local makers 25 per cent, over the foreign price, but when the tenders were opened he found not one of them under ( 100 per.cent, greater than the price paid j for the American plates last year. J What was he to do? he asked. If he accepted a local tender the cost of the plates to motorists wouiu be a great deal higher than they were last year. He had decided to call for fresh tenders locally, and if any of them were at all reasonably near the foreign price, he would give -hem every consideration.
